This prehistoric stone axe was excavated from the banks of the Rio Grande in northern New Mexico and combined with a reconstructed wooden handle emulating what is envisioned as a realistic replacement handle is a rare and powerful example of ground-stone toolmaking. Carefully shaped and given its smaller size, such objects served many practical and utilitarian purposes within prehistoric Southwestern communities.
