A long exposure is a decision about time. Kim Richardson holds the shutter open until the water and the sky stop being a moment and become a duration, and what comes back is not a picture of the ocean so much as a picture of how long the ocean has been doing that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Richardson is a photographic artist based in Santa Fe. She studied fine art and photography at Moore College of Art and Design and at Parsons, and spent close to a decade in New York photographing art and antiquities for Sotheby’s and Phillips before turning fully to her own work. Her practice explores the dreamlike nature of being through long exposure and serial forms, revealing impermanence and cyclical rhythms. Her work was shown in Breath Taking<\/em> at the New Mexico Museum of Art in 2021, and she holds a Ballinglen Arts Foundation fellowship for 2025 to 2026. Alongside her own practice she works in fine art printing at Rush Creek Editions with master printer Steve Zeifman. She lives in Santa Fe with her husband, Willy Richardson, and their daughter, Audrey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten years photographing other people’s objects for the auction houses is an education you cannot buy, and Richardson came out of it with an eye that knows exactly how much to leave out. There is nothing ingratiating in this work. It asks for the same patience it was made with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
