About the property

607 Miller is the last house at the end of a lane off Camino de las Animas, near the Old Santa Fe Trail on the Eastside. It is a single level adobe of 2,909 square feet with three bedrooms and three baths, four fireplaces, and a walled garden on a lot of just over an eighth of an acre. There is no garage, which is the Eastside trade: the lanes were laid out for burros, not cars, and the houses on them are worth it.

The house

The walls are the point. They are thick adobe and they undulate, the way old adobe walls do when they were built by hand and have settled for decades, and the vigas and latillas above them are finished like art objects rather than structure. Skylights bring light into the deep interior that thick walls otherwise keep dark.

Against that quiet background the house has color. The kitchen cabinetry is handcrafted and painted. The accent windows are hand painted. The ironwork is custom, the floors and counters are tile, and the four fireplaces divide the house into warm rooms. The whole is walled and gardened, completely private from the lane, and the furniture package was available to a buyer who wanted the house as it stood.

The neighborhood

Camino de las Animas runs between the Old Santa Fe Trail and Camino del Monte Sol in the heart of the Eastside, a few blocks from Canyon Road and a walk to the Plaza. The lanes off it are the neighborhood at its most intimate: narrow, unpaved in places, and lined with adobe walls that give no hint of what is behind them. A house at the end of one is as private as the Eastside gets. The schools are Wood Gormley Elementary, Capshaw Middle, and Santa Fe High.

A walled Eastside adobe without a garage finds a particular buyer, one who has already decided that the walls and the lane are worth more than the parking, and our job was to put the house in front of enough of those buyers to find the one who wanted this house in particular.
