A Wonderful, Fantastic Night in the Railyard

Notes from the ground at Raashan Ahmad’s Hip Hop Festival
Raashan Ahmad’s Wonderful Fantastic Hip Hop Festival landed in the Santa Fe Railyard Plaza on the evening of August 7, presented by Vital Spaces and Lensic 360 with Santa Fe Brewing Co. as presenting sponsor. The name is not modest, and by the end of the night it did not need to be. It was, plainly, a lot of fun.
Slum Village and Souls of Mischief and Brother Ali are not names you take lightly, three separate lineages of American hip hop, each with its own gravity, all of them carried into one open-air evening in a high-desert railyard. Studio 284 opened, DJs held the floor between sets, and a fashion show and murals painted in real time reminded everyone that Hip Hop has never traveled alone. It has always been a whole culture. The evening even included a DJ set by Mike Garcia, Santa Fe’s current mayor.

What stayed with us, though, was the crowd. It spanned generations in a way you rarely see and cannot manufacture: older folks settled into lawn chairs, babies in arms, teenagers up front, a good number of us somewhere in the comfortable middle. The bars and breweries around the Railyard were full of energy, the evening was beautiful in the way only an August dusk here can be, and the whole thing had the unforced ease of a community that simply wanted to be out together. Joy is a hard thing to stage. This was the genuine article.

Raashan Ahmad is the Executive Director of Vital Spaces and Christopher is a founding board member. Vital Spaces exists to make room for artists in this city, and a night like this is exactly what that work is for: a whole town, every age of it, gathered in one place for a few good hours. Helping bring events like this to Santa Fe, the kind that pull people together rather than apart, is among the things we are proudest to be part of.
There is no place like Santa Fe, and there is no substitute for being in it. We came home tired and happy, ears ringing a little, glad that four years on, this festival has become one of the loudest and most joyful fixtures on the summer calendar, and one worth planning around. We can’t wait for next year!
