SITE Santa Fe: Contemporary Art in the Railyard

SITE Santa Fe owns nothing. It is a non-collecting institution, which means everything in the building arrived for a season and will leave again, and the place has to be rebuilt around each idea that comes through it. That is unusual anywhere. It is close to unheard of in a town whose art economy runs on permanence, on collections, and on Canyon Road. SITE is at 1606 Paseo de Peralta, in the Railyard, in what used to be a beer warehouse.

The Biennial Came First

The institution exists because of an exhibition. Laura Carpenter, a Santa Fe gallerist, conceived it in 1992 and raised more than a million dollars. SITE was incorporated on February 1, 1995, and its first biennial opened that July with thirty-one artists from thirteen countries, organized by Bruce W. Ferguson with Vince Varga. At the time it was the only international biennial of contemporary art in the United States, which is a sentence about Santa Fe as much as it is about SITE.

Each edition afterward went to a different outside curator: Francesco Bonami in 1997, Rosa Martínez in 1999, Robert Storr in 2004, Lance Fung’s Lucky Number Seven in 2008. In 2014 the whole format was rebuilt as SITElines, a six-year commitment to the art of the Americas running across 2014, 2016, and 2018. It returned in 2025 under a new name, the SITE SANTA FE International. That twelfth edition, Once Within a Time, curated by Cecilia Alemani, ran from June 27, 2025 to January 12, 2026 and spilled out of the building into more than a dozen partner venues around the city. The thirteenth opens in the summer of 2027 under Ekow Eshun.

The Building

Richard Gluckman converted the warehouse in 1995 and left it plainly industrial. SHoP Architects broke ground on an expansion in August 2016 and reopened the building in the autumn of 2017 at just over thirty-six thousand square feet, adding galleries, an auditorium, a learning center, a café, and outdoor space.

The front is the part people argue about. A wedge of folded, perforated metal cantilevers more than fifty feet out over the entrance, calibrated, in the architects’ own account, to the intensity of the Santa Fe light, and it does not look the same at four in the afternoon as it did at ten. The long side walls are gray stucco and say nothing at all. Set against the adobe vocabulary that governs nearly every other building in this city, it is an argument, and the Railyard is the one district where making that argument is permitted.

What You Will Actually See

Between biennials, SITE commissions and stages solo and group exhibitions, which is where most visitors encounter it. The work is contemporary and frequently built for the space it stands in, so a show here rarely resembles a show anywhere else. The galleries are large enough that artists attempt things they cannot attempt in a commercial gallery, and a fair number take the invitation. Around the exhibitions run artist talks, screenings, performances, and workshops. New Mexico artists appear regularly alongside international ones, which keeps the institution attached to the place rather than merely sited in it.

Going

SITE sits at the north end of the Railyard, seven blocks or so southwest of the Plaza and walkable from it. The New Mexico Museum of Art‘s Vladem Contemporary is a few minutes away in the same district, and the two together make a serious afternoon of contemporary work, which is not what Santa Fe is usually given credit for. La Choza is at the south tip of the park for lunch. Admission policy and hours change, so check before you go.

For the other end of the spectrum, Meow Wolf is a short drive further southwest, and Canyon Road makes the historic case for the opposite proposition entirely.
