The Urness photograph in this show is dated December 5, 2016, and anyone who was paying attention that winter knows what that date is. It is Standing Rock. She made it as a digital type C print, and hanging it in August of 2019 was a way of saying that the thing did not end when the cameras left.
The exhibition
UNBROKEN opened on 2 August 2019 with work by Zoë Urness, Josedgardo Granados, Yuki Murata, Patrick McFarlin, Robert Stivers, Danae Falliers, and Elliott McDowell.
Among the works shown were Urness’s December 5, 2016, Danae Falliers’s Library91 (medicine), and Patrick McFarlin’s Acequia Madre.
In the collection’s words
There was no single medium holding this show together and there was not meant to be. A digital type C print, a pencil drawing, soil pigment on linen, and a painting of an irrigation ditch that has been running through this valley since before any of us arrived. What was unbroken was not a material or a style. It was the line of attention, from one generation of people looking hard at this place to the next.
Titling a show Acequia Madre would have been too easy, but McFarlin’s painting is arguably the thesis. The mother ditch still runs. Somebody still clears it every spring.
